A testimonial from one of our special families that
tackled the challenge of New puppy and baby ...
this is possible but not for everyone
My name is Kristen, and I'm the owner
of Casey, an Adi pup from 2004 from
Arcane. Firstly, let me say that we waited two years from the time that we
first met
Heather and her brood, to the time we brought Casey home. After looking
seriously at many breeders, we knew Heather and Arcane were the right place
for us to get our puppy. We have not looked back for a single moment since.
When I found out that Adi was expecting, I was so excited. We were counting
down the days until Casey came home! Little did I know, that I ended up
getting pregnant myself for the first time on the day that Adi had her
pups!! Into April, as my husband and I realized we were pregnant, and I
started feeling AWFUL with first trimester woes, I contacted Heather to say
that there just didn't seem to be any way I could imagine training a pup
during my pregnancy, and then having a baby within a few months of getting
through that! Heather was wonderful - she offered us time to think about
our decision, even though time means money - she further offered, once we
decided we had to have this puppy, that if we were overwhelmed when the time
came, she would keep Casey, train him, and when he was about 6 months old we
could get him then. Unbelievable!
Matt and I made the decision to bring Casey home - did I mention we have a
ridiculous Bernese as well? (Casey and Kara are one year apart, so she was
just turning one when we brought him home). From the very first night,
Casey curled up into his crate, nose to nose with Kara in hers beside him,
and we didn't hear a peep. He house-trained in a matter of 3 days. He has
been the most calming force in our household ever since! Casey is gentle
mannered, polite, and very soft (I don't mean his coat!) He has trained
more easily than any dog I've ever had. Frankly I was surprised that by the
time the summer came, the work with Casey was mostly behind us (we still
struggle with pulling on the lead, lol). My last trimester was wonderful,
as Casey would come each night and lay his head on my belly, feeling the
baby move, and would fall asleep even as his head was being jostled around!
It was precious. When our son Noah was born in November of that year, (we
brought Casey home in May), he went right to his side, laid down, and has
been his old-soul protector ever since.
I'm sorry this is so long - I am passionate about my dogs, and about
Heather. But, there is something different about Adi, and Heather chose our
puppy for us,
knowing of my concerns with the pregnancy and year ahead with a newborn.
She couldn't have been closer to the mark.
Cheers,
Kristen & Matt Rayner
